"Don't forget your swimsuit for the MIT swim test!"

When you arrive at MIT, one of the first things you will do is sign up to take a swim test.  Now, you might be wondering, "Why do I have to take a swim test? Whether or not I can swim surely can't affect my math grades!" In this respect, you are correct. However, despite your math grades, YOU CAN'T GRADUATE FROM MIT WITHOUT PASSING YOUR SWIM TEST! And trust me, it has happened that someone did not graduate because he never took his swim test.

MIT makes it easy for you to take the swim test by providing you with many opportunities when you arrive. And, you get a FREE T-shirt (the first of many here at MIT). So, take my advice and take it before or during Orientation.

If you are unable to take the swim test for health, religious, or other extenuating circumstances, there are options. Please go to your scheduled time despite the fact that you won't be taking the swim test and talk to one of the staff members. If you can't swim, and believe me, there are quite a few incoming freshmen who don't know how to swim, don't worry. Instead of a swim test, you can take a swim class and learn how to swim.

During the swim test, you can also take your boat test, which is an additional 10 minutes of treading water. When you pass the swim test, you will have access to cool classes like SCUBA. When you pass your boat test, you'll be able to take boats out from the sailing pavilion at your leisure.

The bottom line: it behooves you to take your swim test as soon as possible.
